47-Third Archbishop of Seattle
The Most Reverend Thomas J. Murphy is installed as the third Archbishop of Seattle in St. James Cathedral on August 21, 1991.
At the time of his installation, a reporter asked the archbishop how he would like to be remembered. He answered, “I hope people will be able to say I helped them bring out the best within themselves and that they will do the same for me.”
During an interview shortly after his installation, Archbishop Murphy summed up one of the core underpinnings of his ministry, “We have to make religion touch peoples’ lives. My conviction has always been somehow or other, within a religious heritage, we have to try to find God and God has to find us.”
